The Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos Serbian Orthodox Church of Orange County, California
Istočnik (Istochnik), with the blessing of parish priest, Father Blasko Paraklis of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos Serbian Orthodox Church in Irvine California, was founded in 2008 by choir director Gorjana Zekic with her small group of inspired people determined to share the riches of the liturgical music of the Orthodox Church. Very quickly, the choir gained a large base of fans thanks to its exceptionally high performance level and the carefully chosen repertoire of masterpieces of Slavic traditional music with an emphasis on Serbian, Russian and Byzantine chant.
The Istochnik Choir has performed concerts in San Francisco at the Holy Virgin Russian Orthodox Cathedral, In Santa Monica, California at St. Peter and Paul Coptic Orthodox Church, St. Paul's Greek Orthodox Church in Irvine, California, at the Diocesan Days gathering in Jackson, California, and various other Serbian Orthodox churches in the Los Angeles and San Diego areas.
What is the meaning of Istočnik?
According to Serbian folklore, this is the early morning sun that falls on a water spring located to the east of where one lives in Serbia. In Serbian beliefs, this early morning sun is interpreted as life-bearing Christ, and the water lit by the sun gains healing properties.
